Update on Nilam Shinde’s Condition and Visa Request
Initial Notification
The family of Nilam Shinde, a 35-year-old student from Maharashtra, was informed about her accident through the hospital and her roommates. Her uncle, Sanjay Kadam, told NDTV that the police admitted her to the hospital, and her roommates informed the family on February 16. “They told us that she’s met with a huge accident. The hospital administration took our permission to operate on her brain. She is in a coma right now, and we need to be there,” he said.
Community Support
Speaking about the responses to her social media post, Supriya Sule mentioned that Indian students in the US have reached out to offer help for Nilam. While she hasn’t been in direct contact with the family, she ensured local support for them. Sule expressed hope for authorities to assist the family, praising Mr. Jaishankar for his empathy and support in student-related issues. “My experience with the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) has been extraordinarily very good. They always go the extra mile to help,” she said.
Visa Request Progress
Ms. Shinde’s family applied for a visa on February 16, two days after the accident. Since NDTV reported the incident, the family mentioned that the government has approached them, promising help as soon as possible. “Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Baramati MP Supriya Sule have called us and promised all possible help,” said Ms. Shinde’s uncle, Gaurav Sanjay Kadam.
India has reached out to the US government regarding the visa application for Nilam Shinde’s relatives. Sources told NDTV that the External Affairs Ministry’s Americas Division contacted the American administration to issue a visa or an emergency travel permit.
Improvement in Condition
Mr. Kadam informed that there has been a slight improvement in Ms. Shinde’s condition, though she remains critical. “Her brain pressure has reduced since yesterday and is now normal. Her blood pressure has also increased and is maintained at a normal rate, but she is still in a coma,” he said.
Earlier, the family mentioned that the hospital had requested the immediate presence of a blood relative to seek permission for surgery. Therefore, they are seeking an emergency visa for her father and uncle. “She lost her mother a year ago to a brain tumor, and her father is very old,” said Mr. Kadam, who will be accompanying Ms. Shinde’s father, Tanaji Shinde, to the US.
