HMPV Virus Outbreak in India: Amid concerns that HMPV significantly impacts children and older adults, the health expert said it is important to keep an eye on the “warning signs”.
Only 3% of people tested for influenza-like illness (ILI) or severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) have been infected with human metapneumovirus (HMPV), raising concerns five years after COVID-19 first emerged, said former World Health Organisation (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Ms Swaminathan also said HMPV infections have been prevalent in India for a few years but had not been much talked about, so it came as a “bit of a shock” to people. The top health scientist’s comments come after India reported seven cases of HMPV, a globally known respiratory virus that recently gained attention after an outbreak was reported in China. The Union Health Ministry said on Monday that the five patients (later two more cases were found) had not traveled recently and infection in other regions or countries had been ruled out.

HMPV Virus Symptoms: What You Need to Know
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus affecting people of all ages, with young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems being the most vulnerable. With rising concerns about its spread in India and globally, it’s essential to recognize the symptoms and understand the associated risks.
Common Symptoms of HMPV
HMPV symptoms are similar to those of other respiratory infections like the flu. They range from mild to severe, depending on the individual’s immune system and overall health:
- Cough – Persistent dry or wet cough.
- Fever – Low-grade or high fever.
- Nasal Congestion – Blocked or runny nose.
- Shortness of Breath – Difficulty breathing, especially in severe cases.
- Wheezing – A whistling sound while breathing.
- Fatigue – General tiredness and weakness.
- Sore Throat – Discomfort or pain in the throat.
- Severe Cases – Bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in infants and older adults.
How Does HMPV Spread?
- Direct Contact: Through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- Surface Transmission: Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face.

- According to health experts, only 3% of respiratory illness cases tested in India have been attributed to HMPV, indicating it’s not widespread yet.
Mortality Rate
- Globally, the mortality rate for HMPV is low, though severe cases can lead to complications like pneumonia, which can be fatal for vulnerable populations.
- No significant rise in deaths due to HMPV has been reported in India as of now.
Precautionary Measures
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
- Avoid Crowded Places: Especially during peak flu season.
- Wear Masks: In public areas if you are unwell or in contact with someone who is.
- Disinfect Surfaces: Clean frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and phones.

- For most people, HMPV results in mild flu-like symptoms and resolves on its own.
- However, it can be dangerous for infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
