“Deva” presents an intelligent, cunning, and unique storyline that’s unfortunately let down by a dragged-out screenplay. Shahid Kapoor is an absolute treat in his explosive massy avatar; he captivates from the very first frame to the last, showcasing his exceptional range and charisma. The ensemble cast shines alongside him—Pooja Hegde delivers a decent performance, while Pavail Gulati is nothing short of amazing. The background music thunders through the scenes, amplifying the top-notch action sequences. The production design immerses you in Deva’s world, and his character is meticulously crafted.

The climax stands out as the film’s highlight—it dares to do the unthinkable and completely blows your mind with its mysteries and twists. However, the screenplay loses momentum at times, and the editing doesn’t always support the pacing, which detracts from the overall experience. Despite these hiccups, the movie remains unique and is bolstered by Shahid’s rock-solid performance. It’s worth a watch if you’re willing to exercise a bit of patience.

The story of “Deva” is genuinely compelling. I imagine Shahid Kapoor receives numerous scripts, and upon reading this one, he must have thought, “This is it.” No one could have embodied Deva better than Shahid; his performance is phenomenal, bringing depth to an already interesting narrative. Yet, it feels like a few elements were missing. The action scenes are balanced well, but some pivotal moments would have been more impactful if they were shown rather than told.

For instance, the backstory where Deva mentions his impoverished childhood—having no money, eating all the sweets, enduring severe beatings from his father that resulted in a broken leg, and then being helped by Pratap (if memory serves me right)—would have added emotional depth if depicted through flashbacks. Introducing these scenes early on, perhaps with a child actor playing young Deva, would have created suspense and deepened the audience’s connection to his character.

The romantic subplot with Diya Sathaye also falls short. When Diya confesses that she likes Deva for his soft side, it feels puzzling because there’s scant evidence of this aspect of his personality throughout the film. Incorporating scenes that develop their connection would have made her admission more believable. Then, when Diya becomes emotional while writing Deva’s name in the newspaper at the end, the audience would have felt a stronger connection. Without these moments, it was difficult to fully engage with their relationship.

Despite these shortcomings, I loved the concept, the plot, and most importantly, Shahid Kapoor’s stellar performance. “Deva” is a film with immense potential—it shines brightly in parts but falters in others. With some patience, it’s a unique cinematic experience that’s worth your time.
