Carey Take Australia To Win Against England in ODI Series

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 champions Australia defeated hosts, England by 68 runs in the second match of the series at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday and continued the winning streak in ODI cricket, making it their 14th successive victory in the format.




England’s improved bowling in the second ODI at Leeds was overshadowed by the return of Australia’s key players—Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Glenn Maxwell—who led their team to a 2-0 series lead. Only Jamie Smith and a few lower-order batters put up some resistance, but Australia’s trio combined to take seven of England’s ten wickets.
For Australia, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey really stepped up under pressure. Marsh, the captain, scored a solid 60 runs even as wickets kept falling around him. Carey showed a lot of grit and patience, forming small but important partnerships with the middle and lower order. One of the key moments was his 49-run stand with No.11 Josh Hazlewood. Hazlewood might have only scored four runs from 11 balls, but he helped Carey keep the innings going from the 37th to the 45th over.
When it was England’s turn to bat, their lineup fell apart, managing just 202 runs by the 41st over. No one reached fifty, with Smith’s 48 being the highest score. England started off well, with Phil Salt hitting two boundaries off Starc in the opening over. But Hazlewood quickly unsettled him, beating his bat repeatedly before Salt edged one to Carey in the fourth over.
Starc then made a big impact, starting with a fantastic diving catch by Matthew Short at second slip to dismiss Will Jacks for a first-ball duck. Shortly after, Starc’s inswinging yorker trapped Harry Brook leg-before, leaving England in trouble. Smith tried to stabilize things with some confident strokes, but Aaron Hardie’s double-wicket over made things worse. Hardie dismissed Ben Duckett with a brilliant one-handed catch and had Liam Livingstone caught down the leg side by Carey for a golden duck.
Smith and Jacob Bethell, who had earlier taken two wickets, tried to rebuild the innings with a 55-run stand. But Maxwell’s introduction into the attack paid off immediately as Bethell was caught by Starc at short third man. Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid, who had both helped England with the ball, joined forces with Smith to extend the innings, but it wasn’t enough. England collapsed from 120 for 6 to 202 all out, with Starc coming back to finish things off by claiming the last wicket of Olly Stone, ending with figures of 3 for 50.

A few minutes earlier at the post-match presentation Carey was asked about potentially just keeping Inglis’ seat warm. “He’s a great young player, he showed that in T20 series’ earlier this tour,” he said. “I’ve sat on the bench the last little period for the Australian team in ODIs and it’s nice to get back out. An opportunity popped up; who knows how long I’ll last but it’s been great fun.”
