Ghatasthapana 2024: Rules and Guidelines
Ghatasthapana, marking the beginning of Navratri, is a sacred ritual that requires careful adherence to traditions and timings for auspicious results. Here are the essential rules and guidelines:
Avoid Amavasya and Nighttime: Ghatasthapana must not be performed during Amavasya or at night as it is considered inauspicious.
Correct Timing: The ritual should be performed within the first one-third of the day, while the Pratipada Tithi is active. If that is not feasible, Abhijit Muhurat is an alternative.
Unfavorable Yogas: Chitra Nakshatra and Vaidhriti Yoga are not ideal for the ritual but are not strictly prohibited.
Before Hindu Midday: Ensure that the ritual is completed before Hindu midday. Any time beyond sixteen Ghatis (approximately 6 hours 24 minutes after sunrise) is considered inauspicious.
Ghatasthapana Vidhi (Procedure)
Preparation of the Kalash:
- Use a clean clay, brass, or copper pot filled with sacred water.
- Surround the Kalash with mango leaves and place a coconut on top, wrapped in red cloth.
Setting Up the Kalash:
- Place the Kalash on a bed of rice or unbroken grains.
- Purify the area with Ganga Jal or water mixed with turmeric, and sow barley or wheat seeds for auspiciousness.
Invocation of Goddess Shakti:
- Light an oil lamp and decorate the area with flowers.
- Apply a Swastik symbol on the Kalash and chant mantras like "Om Dum Durgaye Namaha" to invoke Goddess Durga or Shakti.
Offerings to the Kalash:
- Offer flowers, kumkum, fruits, sweets, and other items while reciting the Durga Saptashati or other hymns dedicated to the Goddess.
Closing the Ritual:
- Perform Aarti and keep the lamp lit for the nine days of Navratri as a symbol of the divine presence.
