Kiran Rao on Laapataa Ladies Oscar Entry: The Film Federation of India described Indian women as people who are a "strange mix of submission and dominance" in an official document about Laapataa Ladies' Oscars entry. The citation has not gone down well with many.
The Film Federation of India (FFI) had already submitted "Rapatha Reddy" as India's official Oscar entry. Now, a document bearing her name is going viral for all the wrong reasons. In the document, the federation appears to define Indian women as people who embody a "strange combination of submission and dominance." In fact, this is mentioned in the very first sentence of the document, explaining why Rapatha Reddy is the Academy's best contender in this category.
Several social media users underscored the problem with that definition. Many even pointed out that the selection committee at the federation consisted of 13 members and all of them were men. "Indian women mix of submission, dominance: Laapataa Ladies Oscar citation slammed (sic)," wrote one X user, while another said, "Probably ChatGpt wrote that Jury's citation for Laapata Ladies (sic)."
The rest of the description of Laapata Ladies in the same document reads: "Well-defined, powerful characters in one world a Laapata Ladies (Hindi) captures this diversity perfectly, though in a semi-idyllic world and in a tongue-in-cheek way. It shows you that women can happily desire to be homemakers as well as rebel and be entrepreneurially inclined. A story that can simultaneously be seen as one that needs change, and one that can bring about change

Laapataa Ladies, released in March this year, follows the story of two rural brides with different dreams who accidentally get swapped at a railway station. This mix-up leads to both hilarious and emotional adventures, not only for the brides but also for everyone around them.
Aamir Khan, the producer of the film, expressed his excitement in an official statement to IndiaToday.in, calling it "the happiest news." He added, "We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. I would like to thank the selection committee of the Film Federation of India for choosing our film to represent India at the Oscars."
Directed by Kiran Rao and written by Sneha Desai, *Laapataa Ladies* is celebrated as a true feminist film and is currently streaming on Netflix. It surpassed 28 other films to become India's official Oscar entry.
