Telugu choreographer Jani Master, who has worked on dance sequences for blockbuster films, has been arrested after a 21-year-old female employee accused him of sexually harassing her for several years, including when she was a minor. Master, who has been suspended by the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and the labor union, has been detained in Bengaluru and will be transferred to Hyderabad.
Telugu choreographer Jani Master, famous for his work in movies like Baahubali and Pushpa: The Rise, was arrested in Goa by the Cyberabad police. He will be presented before a local court there, according to a senior police official.
Jani Master’s real name is Shaik Jani. After getting a transit warrant from the Goa court, he will be taken to Hyderabad. His arrest follows accusations of sexual harassment by a 21-year-old woman, who claims the harassment started when she was a minor and continued for several years. Jani Master even won a national award for best choreography for his work in Thiruchitrambalam.
The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and a workers’ union have suspended him. He was initially taken into custody in Bengaluru and will be transferred to Hyderabad, as reported on September 19. Actor Jhansi, who is the Chairperson of the Chamber’s panel investigating the allegations, mentioned that the charges of rape and criminal intimidation could lead to action under the strict Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. PTI has confirmed that a case under the POCSO Act has been registered against him.
The woman said that two years after meeting her, Jani Master offered her a job as an assistant choreographer, which she accepted. She claims the sexual assaults began after this, including an incident at a hotel in Mumbai where they were staying for a show with two other male dancers.
She also accused him of threatening her with violence if she reported the incidents and mentally harassing her during photoshoots and rehearsals. Additionally, she alleged that he pressured her to convert and ‘marry’ him, despite being already married. On one occasion, she claimed that both he and his wife entered her room and slapped her.
Jani Master has also worked on several Bollywood movies like Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, Stree 2, and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. In Stree 2, he choreographed the song “Aaj ki Raat,” featuring Tamannaah Bhatia.
